Introduction

Virtual machines like:

- VMware Player ®
- VMware Workstation ®

enables you to run a 'computer' inside your computer.

To make this work you need to build appliances which works within the vitual machine. This can be done by anyone who has basic knowledge plus documentation for each virtual machine and above all time and patience.

NO dual booting risking your production OS and NO hassle running a LiveCD.

- All our appliances have WMware Tools installed
- Ethernet connection is set to NAT unless specified otherwise.
- USB and CD-ROM are enabled and working.
- Floppy and serial/parallell ports are disabled by default.(Can be reactivated).
- Screen resolution varies but is mostly set at 1200x900. Can be changed easily.
- Some settings can be edited in a normal text editor by opening the *.vmx file.
- We have NO affiliation whatsoever with VMware apart from being regular users of their products.

General
All appliances have been compiled with VMwareTools installed allowing for movement of the mouse freely between host/guest, free setting of screen-resolution (xorg.conf modified with VMware), cut/paste and drag/drop between host/guest is tested and works unless otherwise specified. ALL our appliances (bagvapps) are slightly customized with our own wallpapers and desktop set-ups mainly to suit our own taste and for branding.

We test each and every appliance on 2 different computers and 3 host platforms (FSC Scaleo H -Intel D, 3GB RAM with XPSP2-3 and XPSP2 MCE and Acer Ferrari Laptop (AMD 64) 1.25GB with Vista Ultimate).

The bagvapps works on VMware Player 2 series and Workstation 5-6 series. We do NOT test on VMware Server and have reports that in some cases there are problems to get appliances working there.

SliTaz "Cooking May 2008 edition"
A unique distro featuring an OpenBox desktop with lxpanel and BusyBox. This distro is smaller than DSL and Puppy Linux as a LiveCD and weighs in at only 25MB before installation of sources etc. as we have done. It is astonishingly fast and responsive although a bit rough on the edges and immature. This is a gem for those who wish to install a basic Linux on a low-end machine or even on a USB-stick. SliTaz features its own package system "Tazpkg" which works nicely although the repository is still limited. This is definitely worthwhile downloading and experimenting with as the potential is great. Due to some incompatibilities between the source and the running kernel it was presently not possible to configure the VMwareTools copy/paste function properly so DnD is not working although the VMwareTools are compiled in the running kernel. I hope you all appreciate that this appliance is NOT as fully fledged as all our other distros when it comes to cups printing and streaming video etc. as it was just too cumbersome on this first release. A new appliance will be built in the near future with a recompiled kernel from the latest source and with printing and other issue resolved. Watch out here. This appliance is built on a 4 GB disk where it occupies 1.9 GB. RAM allocated is 488 MB and the download is 462 MB....DOWNLOAD

openSOLARIS 2008.5
Codename 'Indiana' solaris distro with GNOME 2.20.2 desktop. Based on SunOS 5.11 version snv_86. Complete with VMwareTools installed . Extra repositories blastwave and sunfreeware installed as well as Cups printing, Adobe Flash and some media files. 688 MB RAM allocated and needs 4.6 GB of diskspace. The download is 952 MB. The physical disk is 14GB. Quite frankly opensolaris is highly immature as a desktop in my opinion. Terribly diffult to turn into an appliance. Sound, network does not work out-of-the-box but is working finally in this appliance. There is a boot-bug in opensolaris on VMware which results in a boot-time of more than 5 minutes. This has also been fixed by us in this appliance although there is NO official fix for it yet by VMware or Solaris. Releasedate was 5th of May. ...DOWNLOAD
